    About the Program

Why Strategy Breaks Down at the Middle - and What HR Can Do About It.
What comes first in your organization - numbers or people? Most organizations believe this is a values question. In reality, it’s a systems question, and the answer often shows up in execution strain and overwhelm. This session examines why execution breaks down at the strategy-execution interface and why middle layers frequently absorb the resulting overload. Drawing on research and executive experience, the presentation reframes execution failure as a translation problem rather than an individual performance issue. Participants will explore common system-level patterns that create misalignment and strain, and consider HR’s unique role in diagnosing execution challenges early, before breakdowns occur, without relying on heroic leadership or costly initiatives.

    About the Presenter

Natalie Runoff is a Strategy–Execution Systems Architect & Researcher focused on how complex organizations translate strategic intent into operational reality. Drawing on prior executive leadership experience and original research, her work examines why execution breaks down at the strategy–execution interface and how a missing translational dimension, rather than individual performance, drives overwhelm and the erosion of organizational capacity and results.
